DUNHAMS VIGILANT
---- SEMPER

CRIME DIDN'T PAY

FRANCIS S. DUNHAM

The rough sketch of the Dunham coat-of-arms on page one is made up of six quarterings, representing the Dunhams & several allied ancestral families, as follows:
1—Dunham (corn & chicken);
2—Bowett (3 stags)
3—Zouche (apparently the Zouche family were bowlers; the upper lefthand section may be showing the 5 bowlers & the balance of the section the bowling pins)
4—Bergh (circles on zigzag band)
5—Bellaqua—(diamond pattern)
6—Dunham again.

Unfortunately, since our ‘art editor” copied from a black and. white picture, the colors of the coat-of-arms are not known. If anyone happens to know what the actual, colors should be, please [advise] DD.

Please note: Page 1 is missing. It will be presented later in another issue.

Fancis S. Dunham (1812—1856) was the eldest son of Ralph & Melinda H. Dunham. A school teacher who left Connecticut in the hope that the milder climate of Maryland would restore his health, he married Leah Anne Handy, of Washington, D.C. & became the father of 4 children: Francis B., Samuel E., Ralph & Mary Cornelia. A large quantity of his letters, saved by his daughter, are now the property of his great granddaughter, Mrs. Andreas (Susan Spaulding) Andersen of Los Angeles, through Mrs. Andersen's kindness, copies of the letters are now in the “Dunham Archives".
